Handicap Betting Explained
A handicap (or spread) levels an uneven contest by giving one side a virtual head start or deficit before the action begins. It turns a one-sided match into a more balanced two-way bet. This guide covers both European and Asian handicaps using hypothetical examples only.
- European handicaps use whole goals and keep a possible draw (three outcomes).
- Your stake is split between the −0.
- Yes.
European (three-way) handicap
A European handicap applies a whole-goal adjustment and keeps three outcomes — home, draw or away — after the handicap is applied. Because the line is a whole number, a handicap draw is possible.
Asian handicap
An Asian handicap removes the draw by using lines such as −0.5, −1, −1.5. Whole-number lines (−1, −2) can push and refund the stake when the result lands exactly on the line.
Quarter (split) lines
Asian handicaps also use split lines such as −0.75, which divide your stake across two adjacent lines (here −0.5 and −1). That can produce a half-win or half-loss — part of the stake wins or is refunded while the rest is settled normally.
- Your stake is split evenly between the two nearest half/whole lines.
- Each half is settled on its own line.
- The two results are added together for your total return.
Where handicaps are used
Handicaps appear across football, basketball (as the point spread) and American football. The maths is the same; only the unit (goals or points) changes.
