Craps Rules Explained
Craps is a dice game with a lively table and many bet types, but the core game is simple once you know the pass line. This guide explains the basics. Exact payouts are shown in the game's paytable.
- You bet on the dice, usually the pass line.
- It is the first roll of a round.
- It is an additional bet backing the point after it is set, paid at true odds.
The objective & the come-out roll
The game runs in rounds. The first roll is the 'come-out'. On the come-out, a 7 or 11 wins the pass line and a 2, 3 or 12 loses. Any other number becomes the 'point'.
Pass line & the point
Once a point is set, the shooter keeps rolling. The pass line wins if the point is rolled again before a 7, and loses if a 7 comes first.
Come bets & odds
A come bet works like a fresh pass line started on the next roll. Many tables also let you back the point with an odds bet, which pays at true odds. These are the core bets most players use.
Other table bets
Craps offers many extra bets — place bets, field bets and one-roll props — each with its own payout. They add variety but are more complex, so beginners usually start with the pass line. See the table games guide for related games.
