Roulette Rules Explained
Roulette is a wheel game where you bet on where a ball will land. There are many bet types, from a single number to broad groups. This guide explains the main ones. Exact payouts are shown in the game's paytable.
- You bet on where the ball will land — a single number, a group of numbers, a colour, or odd/even.
- A straight-up bet on a single number pays 35:1.
- European roulette has a single zero; American roulette adds a double zero, giving the wheel one extra pocket.
The objective
You place chips on the betting layout, the wheel is spun, and a ball settles into a numbered pocket. Bets covering that number win; the rest lose.
Inside bets
Inside bets cover specific numbers and pay the most. A straight-up bet on a single number pays 35:1; splits, streets and corners cover small groups for lower payouts.
Outside bets
Outside bets cover large groups — red/black, odd/even, high/low (each close to an even-money payout) and dozens or columns (paying 2:1). They win more often but pay less.
European vs American
European roulette has a single zero; American roulette adds a double zero, which adds one more pocket to the wheel. The bet types and payouts are otherwise the same — always note which variant you are playing.
