Ice Hockey Betting Explained
Ice hockey betting centres on three markets — the moneyline, the puck line and totals — with period betting and props on top. The key rules to understand are how overtime and the shootout affect settlement. All examples below are hypothetical and illustrate mechanics only.
- Full-game moneyline, puck line and totals usually include overtime and the shootout.
- The puck line is a fixed 1.
- For full-game totals, overtime goals usually count.
Moneyline
The moneyline is a straight bet on the winner. Most full-game moneylines include overtime and the shootout, so a team that wins in OT still wins your moneyline bet — but confirm in the rules, as 'regulation time' markets also exist. See the moneyline explained.
Puck line
The puck line is hockey's fixed handicap, usually 1.5 goals. The favourite at -1.5 must win by 2 or more; the underdog at +1.5 can lose by 1 and still cover.
Totals (over/under goals)
Totals combine both teams' goals against a line, commonly around 5.5 or 6.5. A half-goal line removes ties; goals scored in overtime usually count toward full-game totals. See over/under totals.
Overtime & shootout rules
This is where hockey settlement gets specific:
- Full-game moneyline / puck line / totals: usually include OT and the shootout.
- 'Regulation' (60-minute) markets: settle on regulation only and can include a tie.
- Period betting: settles on that period alone, not OT.
Always read whether a market is full-game or regulation before betting.
Ice hockey betting strategy
Goaltending form, back-to-back schedules and special-teams (power play) strength are the angles experienced bettors watch. Because underdogs win outright more often than in many sports, the moneyline and puck line can both offer value. Build multis with an accumulator only when you understand the combined risk.
